Use DatumDesk in Claude and ChatGPT

Connect DatumDesk to Claude or ChatGPT and ask National Construction Code questions in the middle of your work. The assistant passes the question to DatumDesk, and DatumDesk returns an answer that cites the clauses it relies on, scoped to your state and building class.

1.What you need

  • A DatumDesk account with an active subscription or trial. Start here if you don’t have one.
  • A Claude account (web, desktop, mobile or Claude Code), or a ChatGPT account.

2.Connect DatumDesk

  • In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors. Find DatumDesk in the directory, or choose Add custom connector and enter https://datumdesk.ai/api/mcp.
  • Select Connect. A DatumDesk page opens. Sign in with your DatumDesk email and the code we send you.
  • Check the details on the “Connect Claude to DatumDesk?” screen and select Connect. You return to Claude, ready to go.

In ChatGPT, find DatumDesk in the plugin directory and select Connect, then sign in and approve the same way.

In Claude Code, run claude mcp add --transport http datumdesk https://datumdesk.ai/api/mcp, then sign in when prompted.

3.What DatumDesk can do in Claude and ChatGPT

  • Ask DatumDesk an NCC question (ask_ncc). Answers a compliance question from NCC 2022 and NCC 2025, state and territory variations, ABCB handbooks and referenced guidance. Returns the answer, its scope (edition, state, building class) and the clauses and source documents it relies on. Read only.
  • Which NCC edition applies(which_ncc_applies). Returns the NCC edition operative in a state or territory today, any edition election window, the next change date and transition notes. Read only, and it doesn’t use a question from your allowance.

Neither tool changes anything in your DatumDesk account or anywhere else.

4.Things to try

  • “What are the riser and going dimensions required for stairs in a house in NSW?”
  • “Where must smoke alarms be installed in a Class 1 house in Victoria?”
  • “Which NCC edition applies to a new house in Tasmania right now?”
  • “Does a Class 2 apartment building in Victoria need sprinklers if it is four storeys?”
  • “What are the waterproofing requirements for a shower area under NCC 2022 Housing Provisions?”
  • “Compare the energy efficiency requirements for a Class 1 house in WA under NCC 2022 and NCC 2025.”

Naming the state or territory gives the most accurate answer, because the operative NCC edition and the variations differ between them.

5.What the assistant can and can't reach

Through DatumDesk, Claude or ChatGPT can ask questions and check editions. It can’t open your projects, saved answers, account or billing, and it can’t read the source documents DatumDesk searches. Each question asked through an assistant is saved to your DatumDesk history, just like a question asked on the website. DatumDesk never receives your conversation with the assistant, chat history, memory or files. The privacy policy has the details.

6.Usage

Questions asked through Claude or ChatGPT use your DatumDesk subscription. To protect the service, each account can ask up to 30 questions an hour through connected apps. If you reach the limit, the assistant tells you, and you can ask again shortly after.

7.Disconnect

In DatumDesk, open Settings and find Connected apps. Select Disconnectnext to the app and its access stops straight away. You can also remove DatumDesk in the assistant’s own settings.

8.Important

DatumDesk is a research tool for built environment professionals. Answers cite the NCC and related documents, but they are not a substitute for professional judgement or advice from your building surveyor or certifier. Check the cited clauses before relying on an answer for a project.
